چکیده
According to the predictions of Gordon Moore in 1965, the number of transistors per square centimeter of silicon doubles every 18 months [1]. This requires that the size of transistors and the interconnecting wires between them decrease at the same rate. Up until now, this miniaturization has been realized by improvements in photolithographic techniques. These techniques will reach their fundamental limit in the near future, as the dimensions of the components drop below tens of nanometers. Therefore, it is of considerable practical and fundamental interest to study the smallest components that are likely to be functional, that is, components consisting of single molecules or groups of molecules. Already in 1959 the eminent physicist Richard Feynman discussed the possibilities of devices of extremely small dimensions in his lecture entitled ‘‘There’s plenty of room at the bottom’’ [2]:

Fabrication of Inorganic-Organic Interfaces
Introduction: Most modern electronic devices are solid state devices, the active components of which are constructed essentially entirely of inorganic materials. To date, and excepting important applications such as photo-resists in lithography, organic materials have played a rather secondary role in this technology. This situation is changing and considerable interest has developed in the pas...
متن کاملPhase coherent electronics: a molecular switch based on quantum interference.
The phenomenon of quantum mechanical interference may be used to control the conductivity of ballistic molecular wires. Using a simple model we demonstrate plausible effects and discuss its potential uses for constructing coherence-based molecular electronics.

The demand for increased miniaturization of integrated circuits has opened the way to the emerging field of molecular electronics. Recent experimental studies have established that single molecules or a finite ensemble of self-assembled molecules can perform the basic functions of conventional electronic components (i.e., transistors, wires and diodes). In particular, it has been demonstrated t...
متن کاملMolecular electronics in junctions with energy disorder
We investigate transport through molecular wires whose energy levels are affected by environmental fluctuations. We assume that the relevant fluctuations are so slow that they, within a tight-binding description, can be described by disordered, Gaussian distributed onsite energies. For long wires, we find that the corresponding current distribution can be rather broad even for a small energy va...
متن کاملCarbon nanotube-based nonvolatile random access memory for molecular computing
A concept for molecular electronics exploiting carbon nanotubes as both molecular device elements and molecular wires for reading and writing information was developed. Each device element is based on a suspended, crossed nanotube geometry that leads to bistable, electrostatically switchable ON/OFF states. The device elements are naturally addressable in large arrays by the carbon nanotube mole...
